Kava: safe, effective and banned!!! A University of Queensland study, headed by Jerome Sarris, recently reported findings on the medical benefits of kava that support what traditional kava drinkers of the Pacific have known for centuries: kava consumption is safe and beneficial. The members of the Gold Coast Fijian and Friends Association Inc hope these scientific findings - in line with those reported by the WHO - will prompt the Australian government to lift the current commercial import ban on kava. We feel these restrictions are unfair as the current concession to Pacific Island communities of 2kg allowance per international traveler is grossly insufficient for traditional ceremonial and social activities.
